The diagnosis of a serious illness will have different meanings and causes various reactions for the individuals who are diagnosed as well as their family members. Quality of life can be enhanced through honest and clear communication among individuals, families, and health care professionals, about treatment options and decisions. Planning for future care throughout the treatment process and as the illness progresses will have the best possibility for ensuring that individuals’ wishes are understood and followed. Factors in seeking care and treatment for serious illness, communication processes, and elements of future care planning will be presented.
