Palliative treatment in terminal liver cancer

Abstract

The prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of cancer with hepatic origin, has increased and it has a low survival rate. This epidemic is caused by chronic viral infections and by the increased incidence of non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis. Because the curative options are limited, disease progression creates, both in patients and their families, uncertainty about disease prognosis and treatment options.

Most cases are diagnosed at an end stage of the disease, when the tumor is unresectable, patients experiencing severe recurrent symptoms, such as pain, asthenia and anorexia that affect both their quality of life and functional status.
