Abstract

The question I will discuss in this paper is related to a topic of medical ethics – the communication of the truth in the case of a patient who is facing an incurable disease and I have formulated it as follows:

“Should a doctor communicate a prognosis to a cancer patient if his disease is progressing and brain metastases have occurred if the patient’s wife, who is his or her primary caregiver, insists – please don’t tell him or her?”

I will present three reasons that support the need for honest communication with the patient.

Keywords: telling the truth, doctor-patient communication, incurable disease
